Rick Accomazzo Slide Show: Tobin, the Stonemasters and Me 1970-1980
Join us as Rick Accomazzo presents the previously untold story of Tobin Sorenson, the boldest of the Stonemasters—young climbers famous for raising free climbing standards in the 1970s. This group included John Bachar, John Long, and was an important influence in Lynn Hill’s early career.
Rick will explain why he believes that Sorenson was the world’s best all-around climber of the late 1970s, able to simultaneously perform at the highest levels of free climbing, aid climbing, alpine climbing, free soloing and high-altitude mountaineering. Rick’s book, Tobin, the Stonemasters and Me 1970-1980; Remembering Tobin Sorenson, the Best Climber in the World details Sorenson’s remarkable climbs from his early adventures in Joshua Tree and Yosemite, through his later travels to Canada, the Alps, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Peru, until he died at the age of 25 in an audacious solo attempt on an icy north face in Canada. The book was a finalist for the Mountain Literature prize at the 2024 Banff Mountain Book Competition.
Rick is one of the original Stonemasters, is a co-founder of the Access Fund, and has been a climber for over 50 years.
Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase after the slide show.
We as climbers are a community of people that travel to all ends of this earth to pursue our love of the rock. If any of you would like to share your experiences with us please email Andrew.
